Retired after 40 years making people like computers, and vice-versa. Emigrated to the suburbs 35 years ago, and have been involved in local governments and volunteerism; also am full-time staff for my wife, who is more heavily involved. Our kids have been away from home since the late 70's, and productively living: Andy is married and owns a software firm in the D.C. area, Tracy has been "cohabitating" for 15 years in Highland Park, IL and is a Social Worker Administrator (came up through the ranks.)

My early job years were in consulting on military projects and aerospace hardware. I also taught and wrote on "Critical Path Planning" for everyday life.

Our hobby, since the kids finished college, has been soft-adventure travel. Now that we're "running a tab" at the local hospital, "minimal walking" is a requirement. A challenge is to try keeping cost to $100/day/person. We recently spent 2 weeks in Ukraine on a river cruise from Kiev to Crimea, with frequent short tours. This is our third CIS trip, we were in Siberia in 1991 when the coup started, and spent time in St.Petersburg via Stockholm. A cruise, around Cape Horn and the Falklands was educational and fun. We try to meet English-speaking locals, and learn something about the culture and attitudes, so it expands our understanding. In Australia, it took time to get people out of "greet the tourist" mode, and start real person-to-person conversations.

After trips, we usually make presentations at local libraries or groups to share what we saw and our impressions. Even though we research the area before travelling, this gives another input and chance for more study. Full-time employment was much easier!
