I got a Ph.D. in English after graduating from the University of Chicago in 1959, and I've been a professor of English (now English and Education) ever since.   I'm now in my 42nd year of college teaching, including twenty-five years at Northwestern, ten at the U of C, and the last five at the University of Illinois at Chicago (a return to my roots, since my freshman year was at Navy Pier).   I've published numerous articles and several books.   In the most recent, CLUELESS IN ACADEME (2003), I discuss my days at Senn and describe how arguing about things like sports taught me the skills that would later help me as an academic.
I'm married, have a young son, and live in   Wrigleyville.
