As a retired journalist, I frequently tell friends that it would have been a better plan to major in retirement during college and gone directly there, rather than working for the intervening decades. During those decades I have been a reporter, editor, and teacher (in the military and as a part-time journalism instructor at the University of Illinois when there was a flood of students enrolling after Watergate). Journalism provided a chance to travel in Europe, Asia and in the United States. My son and his wife in Naperville have a 3-year-old daughter and expect another young 'un this fall. My daughter and her husband, in New Jersey at this writing but perhaps returning to the Midwest by reunion time, have a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. College days were spent at Navy Pier, Champaign-Urbana, and Northwestern. Working days were in Champaign, Chicago, Charlotte, and Carbondale before returning to Champaign, which has been home since 1972. Most amazingly, all of this has happened since that June 1955 graduation night, which right now doesn't seem to have been so very long ago.
